The best places to visit around the world in December

About some, December is for getting together with friends and family for some much-needed quality time. For others, it’s a chance to relax and reflect before the New Year in the form of a retreat. Whether you’re seeking to bring the family or go your own way, we’ve selected the top locations to visit across the globe in December to make some last remarkable experiences before a new year emerges.

For romantic vibes: Venice

Venice

No matter what time of year it is, Italy is always a wonderful idea. However, Venice in December is especially spectacular. Though you won’t have pleasant temps or summer sunlight, you can’t miss out on a classic gondola trip. It’ll be a bit foggy around this time of year, but the winter mist increases the mysterious, romantic feeling. Travel back in time and enjoy a performance in the famed opera house, Teatro La Fenice, Venice’s primary theater for close to 300 years. Lastly, an apparent must-do is to have a taste of the country’s drink of choice. The best method to do it? A wine tasting tour, of course. Sample area wines, find local taverns, and sample Venetian delicacies. Note: make careful to carry proper footwear for this time of year, when the presence of the acqua alta (a high tide that converts certain paths into lagoons) is expected.

For absorption in nature: Costa Rica

Costa Rica

December starts off the peak season and the drier half of the year in Costa Rica, so although there may be more people than, say, October, you’ll be guaranteed to enjoy wonderful weather and lots of things to tap into. Adventurers should visit Arenal Volcano National Park, where you can trek up the active volcano and take in the rainforest vistas, dive into hot springs, or enjoy a rafting adventure. Those wishing for a more tranquil experience may go to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast to bathe in the sun at Tamarindo Beach. Or, get an insight into the country’s cultural past with a stop in San Jose and a visit to the Teatro Nacional Costa Rica. Built in 1897, the ancient theater is a must-see with its spectacular architectural architecture and opulent furniture.

For luxury shopping: Dubai

Dubai

Craving a little of luxury this December? The Dubai Mall has practically every high-end luxury designer and jeweler conceivable. Beyond shopping, the mall is home to the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, as well as the Dubai Ice Rink—both are great for keeping youngsters amused. Visit The Dubai Frame and take a time to take in its unusual design—both outside and inside. Inside, there’s a museum documenting the city’s history and you can truly admire the Frame’s glass flooring at the summit of the 492-foot building. Dubai becomes somewhat cool in December, dipping into the 70s compared to its regular 100-plus heat, so make sure to take advantage of the weather and arrange some outdoor activities, like ATV desert excursions.

For a winter wonderland: Zermatt

Zermatt

Embrace the cold and travel to Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. Aside from being Switzerland’s most prominent monument, the Matterhorn is Zermatt’s major attraction. Take in the mountain and other lovely vistas on a guided stroll along the mountain paths or in a helicopter trip over the Swiss Alps. That said, the greatest way to enjoy this region is by gliding down the mountain itself, either by skiing down the slopes at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or embarking on a husky-led sleigh trip. Heads up: Zermatt is a car-free city, although there are alternative kinds of transportation including horse-drawn carriages and electric-powered vehicles available.

For warm temperatures: Queenstown

Queenstown

In December, Queenstown welcomes the summer season with its long bright days and soaring temperatures—perfect for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Visit Queenstown Hill and have a lovely trek or explore it by ATV. Experience the mountain vistas, lakes, and check out the Basket of Dreams placed near the top point of Queenstown Hill promenade. More of an adrenaline junkie? Go canyoning and repel, swim, jump, and zip line, making the most of your out-of-the-box experience. Prefer a peaceful walk instead? The free Queenstown Gardens is situated right in the center of town, guiding tourists along Lake Wakatipu’s waterfront amid flowers and groomed landscaping.

For seafood and beaches: Maldives

Maldives

Need an even more intense relief from the cold? The Maldives at Kaafu Atoll is a tropical dreamscape. Complete with stunning turquoise oceans, white sandy beaches, and temperatures reaching a pleasant 85 degrees, paradise is surely guaranteed—especially since December marks the beginning of Maldives’ dry season. Visit Male to explore the fish markets and local stores by day and soak in the noisy nightlife as the sun sets. Book a VRBO or vacation property and plan on enjoying the numerous tastes of the island like a local: Head to the Male Fish Market for dinner supplies—it’s famed for its huge tuna catches and other fresh local fish—and the Male Local Market for the ripest items to finish your meal. Make sure to see Artificial Beach, a stunning man-made shoreline built like a crescent.
